The mill sluice is now permanently closed and all the water has to pass under the 5m wide road bridge and then through a 3m wide narrows. The weir has a bypass sluice - now blocked - that would have been opened during flood times to lower the level in Pickering, this would also have cleared some of the gravel in the river.
