The original river probably came down the middle of the valley somewhere but has been diverted by the railway and the fish farm to the western channel - 3m wide in one place. The eastern channel is a mill race controlled by a 1m wide sluice upstream. Flood water leaves the river channel and flows down Wells Lane inundating Belle Isle museum and neighbouring properties
