Survey on Calderdale June 2012

This area suffered several floods in June 2012. Todmorden may have been caused by gravel under Morrison’s bridge. Hebden may have been caused by gravel accumulated under the aqueduct. Mytholmroyd may have been caused by a narrow bridge and river below the town. BRG is where a canal barge may have damaged a river wall.
The whole River Calder appears to be full of gravel in this area, perhaps because it has been restricted with walls and tunnels, etc. But nowadays no one clears gravel so it can only build up as in any river. Any walls and restrictions will eventually be filled and the river will rise and overtop at the lowest point. The best way may be to clear the gravel and maintain the river depth but this is not allowed.
