Ballater flooded in December 2015. According to the BBC the flood water came over the golf course and into town. The bridge in town is 88m wide old and well built with stone. This would have been built to take any expected flood water - probably the last bridge was swept away in a storm. The river should have some resemblance to the same width but looking at Google Earth this does not appear so.
I have copied the outline of the 4 arched bridge across the site to scale, the blue lines might indicate the original banks or what is now necessary to prevent flooding. This width should be available to the river, it is not the flood plain.
